About Dee
Professional experience
I have more than 30 years’ experience in print and digital publishing, initially as a journalist and foreign correspondent for national and international news organisations, including the Guardian, Observer, BBC World Service, US National Public Radio and Time Magazine. I launched Red Pepper magazine and worked for Channel 4 Television before entering the charity sector, where I held senior communication and campaigning roles in the UN children's fund Unicef, Amnesty International and Oxfam, among others. After four years as Director of Communication and External Affairs at University of the Arts London, I left in 2014 to set up a free arts and humanities university for young Londoners who can't afford education fees.
I am experienced in building and maintaining teams of publications professionals (writers, editors and designers) and volunteers. I have managed both large and small publishing projects to budget and deadline.
Green Party experience
As an active member of Camden Greens, I convened a new social media group and became Camden GP’s London Fed Representative. I was a paper candidate for Camden GP in the 2014 local council elections.
I stood as the Green Party 2015 General Election candidate for Tottenham - officially the most diverse constituency in Europe - after the original candidate stood down for personal reasons. We used smart communication to maximise the impact of our limited resources. The result was growth in Green support across the constituency, regardless of people’s social, economic, cultural, ethnic or other backgrounds. We surpassed all expectations by achieving a strong third place (up from fifth in 2010 with four times as many votes) and 9.2 per cent share.
During the 2015 campaign, we collaborated with other London Green Parties around common issues, such as disability, housing, race, immigration and international affairs, through joint publications and activities.
Activism and leadership experience
I am a social, political and environmental activist at heart. My first act of resistance was to organise a petition at the age of 10 to stop the proposed demolition of Clapton Pond in Hackney to make way for a road-widening scheme. The campaign was successful (although I suspect it wasn't solely due to my petition!) and that set me on a lifetime trail of standing up for our environment and the rights of individuals and communities in the UK and more widely.
I have held senior leadership positions in local, national and international organisations, including the National Union of Journalists, Campaign for Press and Broadcasting Freedom, Home-Start Camden, Weekend Arts College and World of Children Awards. I have experience of abiding by the high standards of financial, organisational and ethical accountability required to provide governance to public membership organisations such as the Green Party.
Other stuff
I was born and raised by working class parents in Hackney and have lived in London most of my life, apart from spells in Bulgaria (when I was a foreign correspondent reporting on the overthrow of communism in Eastern Europe) and in New York (when I worked at the headquarters of Unicef, the United Nations Children's Fund). I have a husband, two stepchildren and a cat called Stanley.
